Planning Committee Minutes
April 25, 2017
Meeting commenced at 7pm
In attendance: Judy, Joseph, Patrick, Justine, Mike, Clay, Eva, Steve
Good Friday went well for Auxiliary. They served 30 plates and collected $180.00.
Legion is selling tickets $10 for two people to the Comedy Club, April 30. All proceeds will be to Legion and will help purchase fireworks for 4th of July and other needed items.
Benefit Run for Fallen Border Patrol Agent Joe Barraza on 4/29. Post 598 will be their last stop. They are bringing in their own cook.
April 1 – Pool tournament between 598 and Tiguar VFW post – has been postponed.
Spring Convention was April 8-9 at Post 58 – attend were Shadow, Clay, Beto.
April 15 – Saturday before Easter Sunday – Bar sponsored the annual Adult Easter Egg Hunt with candy, drinks, etc inside the eggs. Sandwiches and finger foods were provided. Event started at 6pm.
May 6 is the Chili Cook-off – Legion Function We now have the judges for the event: Cindy, Cecily, Eva, Shadow, Ruben, Debbie, Clay, Joseph, Justine and Patrick. There will be a $2.00 fee for tasting. Trophies have been purchased. Judging will commence at 2pm. Cheese and crackers will be provided for the judges – Beto will donate cheese and Eva will donate crackers. This event will be posted at all relevant Horizon web sites.
May 29 – Memorial Day –Speakers will be from SALS and Auxiliary. All entities are to provide Commander with any members who have passed in the last year. Services will start at the Memorial Wall at 6pm. This will be a pot luck, asking attendees to bring a dish. Food will be available in back hall and a movies provided by this Chairman will be shown that she highly recommended as a thought provoking patriotic movie. Members are encouraged to view this movie and have a bite to eat.
June 10 – Flag Day ceremonies have been changed to the Saturday before Flag Day – Rider/SALS/Legion function Ceremonies will commence at 5pm. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served and attendees are asked to bring a side dish. It was decided that this event will be free to all. This event will be open to public and will be posted at all Horizon web sites. Sodas will be available at $1.00 for first soda and refills free OR we will get cans of soda which will be sold for $1.00 each. Commander will get with Bar Manager as to how sodas will be sold.
July 4 – Independence Day – This will be a community event. Flyers will be prepared and handed out to businesses. There will be a posting on all Horizon web sites. We will ask that Walgreens and Vista put this on their reader boards. There will be food booths and arts & crafts booths that can be reserved at $10 per table. Clay will provide music and fireworks if not banned. Clay will find out about special events permit. It was decided that Sam should reserve two jumping balloons. We may possibly have door prizes and one of the members said we could have Channel 9 put this in their community events. We have not established at beginning time for this event. Lower parking lot must be cleared for parking. Deadline for reserving tables for arts & crafts is June 21. Everything open to public.
September 4 – Labor Day – Starting 9/1 to 9/4 – All member Legion camping trip to within 10 miles of Cloudcroft. Directions will be provided. A reservation has been made for $295 for at least 30 people. There is room for a lot more. Area has restrooms and probably picnic tables and lots of room to camp. – $10 per adult, children 12 and under are free. Next meeting we will discuss the menu and campers will bring their own food (if menu is ribs on Saturday – everyone will bring their own ribs and we will cook together. Bring RV’s, tents, blanket roll and sleep by fire. Good fun! We will decide on somethings we can do as a group and individually in future meetings.
September 9– USO Run starting at 10am at Harley Davidson parking lot. 598 will be the final stop. Eva will bar tend in back hall so we don’t need another bar tender. Food will be served.
October – mid October there will be a community cat fish fry
Our next meeting will be May 23 at 7:00pm.
There being no other business to come before the meeting we adjourned at 8:02 pm.
